Dozens must return to Iraq

The Netherlands wants to send dozens of people back to Iraq Thursday, according to a letter from refugee organisation VluchtelingenWerk and confirmed by Interior Affairs.

Refugee Council insists that the situation in Baghdad is too dangerous, but the department denies their claims. The organisation is also angry about what they call “raid tactics” recounted by people in Ter Apel and Heteren. “The families are literally being lifted from their bed. For adults this is frightening, but for children it’s absolutely traumatic.” The ministry says that at half past seven in the morning they will be arrested, just before the children must go to school.

Interior Affairs suggests that people note they may appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to determine whether their deportation could be postponed. Government advisory organisation, Raad van State has granted a delay to one family from Heteren.
