AMSTERDAM – A Rotterdam judge decreed on Friday that immigration minister Rita Verdonk must re-examine the application for speeded-up naturalisation for the Ivory Coast soccer player Salomon Kalou.

Kalou, who plays for Feyenoord and has lived in the Netherlands for just two years, has had his application for full citizenship turned down twice already this year by the administrative person in charge.

The Minister’s assertion that Kalou is insufficiently naturalised was rejected on the grounds that he speaks and understands Dutch fluently, although he has failed his written test.

The court’s decision means that the door is still open for the 20-year-old Kalou to play for Holland in next summer’s World Cup in Germany – a door that team coach Marco van Basten promised would be kept open for him.
