THE HAGUE – Christian Democrat CDA faction leader Pieter van Geel has warned the cabinet not to concentrate on the forty problem neighbourhoods for which extra funds were earmarked in the coalition agreement at the expense of other problem areas.

"The cabinet must not fail to get involved in other cities, that may have neighbourhood number 41 or 42," he said in the regional GPD newspapers on Monday.

The forty problem neighbourhoods designated by Minister for Housing, Communities and Integration Ella Vogelaar are largely in the Randstad conurbation. The housing corporations are being instructed to contribute to a fund of EUR 1 billion to help improve these neighbourhoods.

Van Geel fears that they will consequently have too little money available for other areas, that do face serious problems but which are not included on Vogelaar's list. "I get letters from aldermen, mayors and housing corporations that are worried about the situation," he said.
