AMSTERDAM — Ministers Piet Hein Donner (Justice) and Sybilla Dekker (Housing, Planning and the Environment) have resigned following the damning report into the Schiphol detention centre fire, RTL has reported.

RTL political correspondent Frits Wester based his claim on information from Hague insiders. It was later confirmed by other sources.

The Dutch Safety Council published its report into the fire that killed 11 detainees earlier on Thursday.

It said there would have been fewer or no fatalities during the fire if government officials had adhered to planning and safety rules.

Agriculture Minister Cees Veerman confirmed shortly after 2pm that Donner and Dekker were on their way to see Queen Beatrix to tender their resignations. But later the government said the ministers would not be going in person.

The government is to give a press conference later.
