AMSTERDAM - The Frenchman arrested after slaughtering his dog in Amsterdam earlier this month remains in custody. The court extended his pre-trial detention by 90 days on Monday.

The public prosecution department in Amsterdam suspects him of violating animal welfare laws, a spokesperson said on Monday.

The man claimed at the time that he had taken hallucinogenic mushrooms and "freed the dog's spirit" by slaughtering the animal using a knife and a pair of scissors. The local health authority (GGD) however reported later that a psychiatric examination had revealed that mushrooms were not at the root of the incident and that the man was psychotic.

Police found the man naked and covered with blood in his van on the Herengracht. The dead dog and a bloody knife were in the van.
