AMSTERDAM — An 18-year-old resident of the Heerlen caused a commotion on Thursday by threatening to blow himself up.

He first threatened to detonate a bomb in the lobby of the town hall. A short time later he suggested he would do this while standing among shoppers on Thursday evening. The man set off a firework that caused powerful flashes of light to add force to his threats.

Police officers quickly overpowered the man. The public was kept at a distance while the man's bag was checked for explosives. It was empty.

The man was arrested. A police spokesman said the suspect appeared to be "disturbed".
