Disaster exercise off Zandvoort

A major disaster exercise has been held off the coast near the popular resort of Zandvoort.

ZANDVOORT - A major disaster exercise has been held off the coast near the popular resort of Zandvoort. The exercise involved the evacuation of more than 5,000 people from a cruise ship.

The passengers had to be taken ashore by seven lifeboats and four helicopters.

This is the first time that a disaster exercise involving a major passenger ship at sea has been held.

The exercise involved members of the coast guard, the navy and local rescue teams.

The evacuated passengers were taken to the nearby town of IJmuiden.
