Dirk van den Broek stops selling white veal
The supermarket chain consisting of Dirk van den Broek, Bas van der Heijden and Dirgros will be the first to stop selling white veal in the Netherlands.THE NETHERLANDS – Supermarket giant Dirk van den Broek will be the first Dutch supermarket to stop selling white veal.
The move by Dirk van den Broek chain, which also includes Bas van der Heijden and Dirgros supermarkets, is seen as the first victory for foundation for animal welfare Wakker Dier in its campaign against white veal.
White veal has been branded by cruel as the calves are separated from their mothers at birth and kept in a concrete crate so that they become anaemic. They do not venture outdoors because they are not allowed to eat grass. Their pale pink meat is supposed to be a delicacy and is a typically Dutch product.
The Netherlands is the largest European exporter of white veal. The European Commission is considering a ban on the product.
The animal welfare foundation, Wakker Dier, is launching a campaign against supermarket C1000, which sells a lot of veal.
