Development aid help desk being set up

A help desk for private Dutch enterprises in the field of development co-operation is to be launched in August. It is being set up by the National Commission for International Co-operation and Sustainable Development NCDO and the Partos umbrella organisation for development groups.

The help desk will supply information to people who plan to offer independent aid to developing countries. “The information can be about subjects ranging from building schools to the setting up of women’s projects,” says Helga van Kampen from the NCDO. The help desk will also use the internet to put groups in touch with each other. “In this way, they will be able to learn from each other and exchange information and experience,” she explains.

There are about 8,000 private development projects running in the Netherlands. Research indicates that private development aid can fall short of accepted standards. In the majority of cases, no proper account is given of what the money collected has been spent on.
