APELDOORN – The condition of the detective, who was shot down on Monday night in a shopping centre in Apeldoorn, is still ‘critical’ today (Tuesday), according to a spokesperson for the police. The victim was operated immediately on Monday.
The detective from Apeldoorn, who was off duty, was shopping in the Anklaar shopping centre on the Thannhauserstraat, when a man aimed and shot at him several times. Shortly before this incident took place, the police officer had reported ‘a suspicious situation’ to his colleagues. The police declined to comment whether the man who had fired the shots was involved in this. The man, who escaped on a bike, is still at large.
About the identity of the rifleman the spokesperson said: “ If he is the man we think he is, then this person is known to the police.” The police assume that the perpetrator must have recognised the police officer.
On Wednesday the police will carry out an additional forensic investigation in the shopping centre, a door-to-door inquiry will be held and the hearing of witnesses will be continued. Between thirty and forty people were close by when the shooting took place. The spokesperson could not indicate how many people had actually seen something.
