Details revealed in crche sex abuse case
Since Robert Mikelsons was arrested in 7 December on suspicion of sexually abusing very young children at various crèches where he worked in Amsterdam, more than 60 parents have pressed charges.
All the children involved were between 0 to two and a half years old when the alleged abuse took place. The Public Prosecution Office believes that Mikelsons chose children in this age group because they are unable to talk properly. The abuse took place at various crèches including the Hofnarretje, at home addresses where he babysat children and at his own home.
In a number of cases, Mikelsons allegedly committed the abuse with other paedophiles. When Mikelsons babysat at other people's houses he always took a camera and lubricating jelly with him. The abuse includes rape.
Police say they are searching for other suspects and have asked for police assistance in the United States, Sweden and Germany.
A "Miffy" cuddly toy in pictures led US child porn detectives to the Netherlands. Two weeks later, the police decided to ask for help from the public "because of the severity of the abuse". A relatives recognised photos of a two-year-old boy on a crimewatch programme. The link with Mikelsons was made minutes later.
Police found eight terabytes 1000 gigabytes of photos, films, emails and chatlogs at the home of Mikelsons and his husband Richard van Olffen. Both men are facing trial. Van Olffen is charged with distributing child pornography and aiding the abuse.
Although police have identified 34 children in the pictures, the Public Prosecution Office expects to bring 70 cases to court. Mikelsons has admitted abusing 85 children. A total of 165 detectives are involved in the investigation and police have collected two billion pages of evidence.
