Depression a hidden affliction amongst youngsters

Anxiety and depression are a much greater problem among young people than previously thought. Recent research shows that in the Netherlands 37,000 people over the age of 12 suffer from depression. Fifteen percent of children up to 18 have experienced a period of depression at some time in their life.

These figures are to be presented at the symposium Youth and Family Research organised by the University of Nijmegen on Thursday and Friday. Depression or related complaints can seriously affect children’s school results. Aggressive and criminal youngsters frequently turn out to suffer from anxiety and depression. The organisers of the symposium say that these problems cost society much more than was hitherto thought.

In Nijmegen scientists will present the results of new treatments for children that include new media, as well as the popular mindfulness treatment, a form of meditation.
