Groningen FC's director Hans Nijland says firefighters were delayed putting out Sunday's fire in the stadium because of insufficient pressure in their hoses.

He also said that communication between the stadium authorities and the emergency services was poor.

Nijland admitted that, in hindsight, it was perhaps unwise to allow hardcore fans to throw large quantities of burning toilet paper onto the pitch.

The fire, which broke out just before the Groningen-Amsterdam Ajax match was due to kick off, caused widespread panic in the Euroborg Stadium.

It destroyed seats and advertising boards, and around thirty people were treated for smoke inhalation. The match was cancelled but has been rescheduled for Wednesday evening.
