AMSTERDAM -  The defence department will purchase six new Chinook transport helicopters. The aircraft cost together almost 390 million euro. The outgoing government decided this on Friday.

The proposal has been sent to parliament.

Two of the aircraft will replace Chinooks involved in accidents in Afghanistan in 2005. The other four are to expand the total fleet, which will number 17 Chinooks after the purchase.

The transport helicopters are essential to the military missions. There have been missions to Ethiopia, Iraq and Afghanistan over the past years.
