EINDHOVEN – The Defence department suspended four soldiers stationed at the barracks in Oirschot on Wednesday after they were questioned by their commander.  The four were involved in an assault on a 28-year-old homeless man in the centre of Eindhoven on 16 May.

A spokesperson for Defence said that the four have been suspended until it is clear what measures the justice department will be taking against them. During their suspension the soldiers may not enter any military complexes or wear their uniform.

Though these two women and two men are not regarded as having participated in the violence, they remain suspects for the justice department.

Five other soldiers are still in custody in connection with the incident. They are suspected of involvement in attempted manslaughter and public violence.

The argument between the soldiers and the homeless man began when he tried to sell them tins of something to drink; the situation promptly escalated.
