THE HAGUE – The defence department was on a higher state of alert than normal for a few hours on Tuesday, the anniversary of the 11 September attacks in New York.

The department apparently received a report that a tanker truck carrying petrol had been hijacked in a plan to attack a military barracks. It was a false alarm however; no evidence was found of such a plan.

A spokesperson for the ministry confirmed on Wednesday that the defence department was on a higher state of alert for several hours on Tuesday afternoon because of a report. He said standard procedures were followed and random checks were carried out at barracks.
