AMSTERDAM – All soldiers who have been deployed in the past will receive a letter from the defence department this year requesting them to report to the Veterans’ Institute if they need care.

State secretary for defence Cees van der Knaap wrote this to parliament on Thursday.

At the request of Labour PvdA MP Angelien Eijsink, contact has already been made with organisations that work with veterans and several dozen veterans who suffer from serious problems have been tracked down.

Eijsink has been urging for some time that the ministry take up its responsibility to provide care for veterans. Military personnel union AFMP says the National Ombudsman is currently investigating if the ministry does provide enough care. The union does not believe that it does.
