THE HAGUE - Defence Minister Eimert van Middelkoop has been asked to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of a dog which was the mascot of a Dutch military base in the Afghan province of Uruzgan.

When the base was closed, the dog - Rattaplan - was handed over to an Afghan police station where his condition deteriorated. He grew thinner and took to following Dutch soldiers around. Eventually, a Dutch lieutenant ordered him to be shot to put him out of his misery.

The Animal Rights Party is now demanding that the defence minister clarify the situation and take disciplinary action against those involved in the dog's death.
