Deer spotters fined for disturbing rut

Twenty-one nature lovers have been fined for disturbing the deer during the mating season this weekend in the Veluwe nature reserve, in the eastern province of Gelderland.

At this time of year the forest is out of bounds to the public after sunset. But dozens of people were so keen to hear the bellowing of the rutting stags they ignored the access ban.

During the rut the stags make a deep, resonant bellow to impress females and ward off competitors. The fines were handed out by police and nature wardens.
