Dead man left alone for four years
A man lay dead on his bed for four years before he was found, in a Frisian village in the north of the Netherlands.
The local police say family members only went to look in the bedroom because the housing association wanted to carry out maintenance work on the house. They found the remains of their 50-year old brother lying on the bed and contacted the family doctor, who in turn informed the police.
The dead man's two brothers 61 and 67 and two sisters 44 and 71 lived in the same house. Apparently they last spoke to their brother in the spring of 2006. He told them he wanted to be left alone in his room.
Police commented: "This is a socially weak family. And he did specifically tell them not to disturb him... It's just incredible that they didn't smell the dead body or discover it earlier."
A post-mortem will be carried out but foul play is not suspected.
