DNA from robbery uncovers rapist

14 September 2007, ZAANDAM – Police think the arrest of a 25-year-old Zaandam man may solve a rape case from 2003. The man was initially suspected of a robbery in which DNA material was found. A DNA sample that police then took from the suspect seems not only to link the man with the robbery, but also with a rape from 2003 in which DNA evidence had been recovered.

ZAANDAM – Police think the arrest of a 25-year-old Zaandam man may solve a rape case from 2003. The man was initially suspected of a robbery in which DNA material was found. A DNA sample that police then took from the suspect seems not only to link the man with the robbery, but also with a rape from 2003 in which DNA evidence had been recovered.

The rape victim was a 37-year-old Zaandam woman. She was attacked in the stairway of her apartment building, abused and then raped in one of the storage areas.

The man is being held in custody.
