More people are failing to meet loan repayments

Despite the economic recovery and falling unemployment, more people in the Netherlands are failing to pay back loans, the Dutch credit registration agency BKR said on Monday.

By July 1, 777,767 people were listed as being in arrears on a loan, a rise of over 7,000 on six months ago, the BKR said. Nevertheless, the rise is well down on the record 31,400 people whose names were added to the debtors’ register in 2013.

‘The crisis had a major impact but in reality, problems with debt are continuing to grow on a daily basis,’ BKR director Peter van den Bosch said in a statement.

The BKR lists credit agreements with banks, mortgage providers and other official credit agencies.

‘The non repayment of loans is only a small part of the social problem,’ Van den Bosch said. ‘People are dealing with far more debt than this. What about tax debts, rent and health insurance?.’
