THE NETHERLANDS - Trouw writes that the Dutch Cyclists' Union has called for automobiles to be fitted with an airbag on the outside of the windscreen.

The cyclists' union commissioned TNO, a Dutch technical research organisation, to investigate collisions between cyclists and vehicles and the results were presented in The Hague on Monday.

After 12,000 crash simulations, the researchers concluded that collisions between vehicles and bicycles usually result in the cyclist's head being slammed against the windscreen.

NRC.next writes that a windscreen airbag could reduce the annual number of deaths by 60 and the number of serious injuries by 1500.

Trouw also reports that the cyclists' union has called for the authorities to discourage people from driving large vehicles such as SUVs in urban areas, as collisions involving SUVs cause far more serious injuries than those with ordinary cars.

The union has also called for the speed limit to be lowered on roads used by vehicles and bikes.
