Curaçao killer sentenced to 30 years
Life sentence reduced on appeal for man who confessed to killing Marlies van der Kouwe last year.
Bonaire – A court on the island of Curaçao has sentenced the murderer of Marlies van der Kouwe to thirty years’ imprisonment on appeal.
Ryan P. was originally sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder, but both he and the public prosecutor’s office appealed against the sentence.
The court reduced his sentence because there was little chance of his reoffending after thirty years in jail, according to authorities.
Van der Kouwe, a 24-year-old pharmacist’s assistant, disappeared on Curaçao in September 2008. Her body was found one month later.
Following his arrest, Ryan P. confessed to strangling her after he attempted to rob her.
