AMSTERDAM -- The cultural season in Amsterdam has officially opened, with more than a half a million people visiting the Uitmarkt Festival over the weekend to enjoy free open air shows and theatre performances.

The organisation says the good weather also played a role in the success of the annual event.

About 2,000 artists performed on 34 stages in and around the Amsterdam eastern port area.

Many of them appealed to Culture Minister Ronald Plasterk to spend more on the arts. He indicated that he may do so, but would not give any details until budget day.

The Uitmarkt Festival will probably be held in the centre of the capital in 2009.
