Crumbs in the bed for Dutch mums
Millions of Dutch mothers are being pampered with breakfast in bed, flowers, gifts and home-made cards. It’s the second Sunday in May, and Mothers’ Day.
The Netherlands celebrates Mother’s Day at the same time as the United States, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. Spanish and Portuguese mums already had their treats last weekend. Mothers in other European countries will have their turn later this month.
The idea of Mother’s Day arrived in the Netherlands from the US in the 1930s. But Dutch enthusiasm for the day has been on the wane for several years, according to data from Q&A Research & Consultancy.
This year 62.4 percent of people in the Netherlands said they were planning to treat their mother today, the research company found. In 2010 the figure was 65.2 percent.
