The witness wants to withdraw as he has lost confidence in the Dutch police’s ability to guarantee his personal safety.

THE NETHERLANDS – A key crown witness in a major criminal court case is threatening to withdraw his cooperation with the court as he has lost confidence in the police’s ability to protect him.

Peter la S does not trust the police can guarantee his personal safety, says his lawyer.

La S, whose surname is withheld for security and privacy reasons, is suspected of involvement in several killings.

He was due to provide evidence against 11 people charged with at least seven gangland killings and has already made a number of incriminating statements against the suspects of liquidations in the capital's criminal underworld.

La S was to be given a reduced sentence and personal protection after his release in exchange for being a key witness.

It is not clear how this will affect the court case as his evidence is considered vital.

However, sources close to the case said La S is not happy with the amount of money which will enable him to rebuild his life.
