AMSTERDAM – Peter la S. (43) will appear in a public hearing for the first time on Tuesday in the high security courthouse in Amsterdam-Osdorp. La S. is suspected of the murder of Amsterdam real estate magnate Kees Houtman in November 2005, but first and foremost he is a crown witness.

In a series of statements he has informed police about a large number of deadly attacks and plans for attacks in the Amsterdam underworld.

La S. will be screened off from the public and press during the pro forma hearing on Tuesday and is part of a witness protection programme.

La S. has confessed to murdering Houtman together with Jesse R. R. was extradited to the Netherlands by Morocco earlier this year. He will have to appear at a later date. He is considered a suspect in a number of other killings.

The public prosecution department has made a deal with La S. that it will ask that he be sentenced only to half of the proposed 16-year sentence in exchange for his testimony.

The justice department hopes to start the actual trial on the killings next autumn.
