Crown Prince Willem-Alexander is today striking the first in a special series of five-euro coins celebrating Dutch achievements in water management.

The commemorative coin pays tribute to the construction of the Delta Works - a series of dams in the Dutch province of Zeeland and the construction of Holland's famous dykes. The prince has been interested in water management for a number of years and has become something of an expert on the issue.

One side of the coin shows the Netherlands split vertically in two. The 'high' land to the east is dry, while the western low lands, which would possibly be under water if it weren't for Dutch technology, are depicted as being submerged. The other side of the coins shows Queen Beatrix with her reflection in water The text along the edge of the coin is also in mirror image.
