AMSTERDAM - Water police in the Amsterdam area conducted a large-scale inspection of boats on Saturday to see whether they met safety requirements and whether the operators had the correct documentation.

They examined over 50 vessels and handed out 15 tickets.

Several people were stopped for travelling too fast, or for not keeping to the starboard side as is compulsory on water. The operator of one tourist waterbus was found to have handed the wheel to a passenger, who promptly crashed the vessel into a sloop.
