AMSTERDAM - Gert V. (55), suspected of sexually abusing children in Bangladesh, is being released. The court in Arnhem announced Friday that it has lifted his pre-trial detention.
The public prosecution department (OM) is not happy with the decision and has appealed, says a spokesperson.
The Marechaussee arrested V. at Schiphol on 6 March. The justice department suspects that he sexually abused orphans and disabled children living in an orphanage that he founded near the Bengal capital Dhaka.
The case against V. was filed in 2005. The OM requested legal assistance from Bangladesh the following year, in order to hear witnesses.
As far as is known that request was not granted. Still the justice department says it has enough information to investigate whether he should be prosecuted.
The spokesperson for the OM says that the man is still a suspect and the investigation into the case continues. It is not known when the appeal court in Arnhem will hear the appeal against the court's ruling to release the man.
