AMSTERDAM – Democrats D66 wants the cabinet to use a different method to determine how large religious communities in the Netherlands are. At the moment anyone whose parents were born in an Islamic country are counted as Muslim. Even if a person distances himself from his religion, he is still counted as Muslim.

D66 had previously pointed out that the same is true for people who are still listed as members of a Christian church but who in fact have left the church.

In questions to the government D66 says that the method currently used gives an inaccurate reflection of how large religious communities in the Netherlands actually are. As a result an inordinate amount time is allotted to certain religious organisations on public broadcasters.
