Council websites off-line because of leak

The websites of about 50 Dutch local councils have been taken off-line because of serious security issues.

The Association of Dutch Municipalities VNG ordered the sites taken off-line after journalistic web blog Geen Stijl No Class alerted the authorities to the fact that the council sites had holes in their security so big “you could fly five Boeing 747s through them side by side”. The Geen Stijl web site features screen shots of the directories of three council websites.

The sites are using an outdated Windows version that makes it extremely easy for hackers to view, copy or change all files on the sites, including classified files containing the private data of council officials and police officers.
