Cool summer carnival passes off without incident
Even though it didn’t really feel much like summer, Saturday’s Summer Carnival in Rotterdam passed off without incident.
The organisers spoke of a ‘flawless’ edition of the port city’s annual Carribean carnival, even though ‘only’ 750,000 visitors came to Rotterdam, about 50,000 less compared to last year.
A spokesperson said it was because of the unfavourable weather. “The weather was cool with a few drops of rain every now and then."
More than 2,000 people from 22 countries took part in the 2.5-kilometre parade which wound its way through the city centre. One of the highlights of this year’s edition of the summer carnival was a successful attempt to establish a new world salsa dancing record by 572 couples in Schouwburgplein in the city centre.
The summer carnival will continue until early Sunday morning. The main after party will be held at the Netherlands Architecture Institute on Museumpark.
