BRUSSELS -  Els Leemans, the woman who has been sentenced in Belgium to 25 years in prison for the murder of her husband, will not have to serve her sentence.

The 45-year-old woman is a Dutch national and fled to the Netherlands after her conviction. The Dutch court has now indicated that it does not plan to arrest her since the law bans the Netherlands from extraditing its own citizens.

Nor can the woman serve her sentence in the Netherlands because Belgium has not yet approved the treaties that would make this possible.

Els Leemans was sentenced to 25 years in prison by an Antwerp court at the end of 2006 for the murder of her husband.
