AMSTERDAM – More than 1,500 people have signed the condolences register for Robert Donkers, the 33-year-old Dutch soldier from Kerkrade killed in Uruzgan last week. Many people have expressed their support for the soldier's wife and family on the defence ministry's website.

The soldier's body was brought to the Netherlands on Sunday. Donkers had been a member of the 42nd Armoured Infantry Battalion the Limburg Jagers since September 2006. He was active in the ISAF mission in Uruzgan since the beginning of March as part of the Bravo Company.

On Friday the army sergeant was killed in an accident with a Patria armoured vehicle. The other soldiers in the vehicle were not injured. The Patria overturned at a river crossing near Tarin Kowt. Donkers became crushed under the vehicle.

A total of five Dutch soldiers have been killed since Dutch troops first arrived in Afghanistan last March. One committed suicide, an F-16 pilot was killed in an accident, and two soldiers were killed in a helicopter accident.
