Concerts mark 100 years of Urk chorus

Urk's Men's Chorus Halleluja has marked its 100th anniversary with a special concert in the Reformed Bethel Church in the fishing village.

Among those invited was the husband of Princess Margriet, Pieter van Vollenhoven, who plays the piano and is a passionate music lover.

During its first four decades, the famous choir was led by the fishermen themselves. After World War II, when a dyke had connected the island to the mainland, professionals began leading it. It was then also that the Christian choir began performing elsewhere.

The choir now counts over eighty men, many of them youths. Its repertoire includes psalms, Christian hymns in a variety of languages as well as classical works. During their performances, the singers are dressed in Urk's traditional style. Since 1960, the choir has recorded over 30 records and 20 CDs as well as seven DVDs.
