Concern at RWE-Gazprom collaboration

The Christian Democrats have asked Economic Affairs Minister Maxime Verhagen questions about a possible collaboration between the German energy company RWE and Russian energy giant Gazprom. RWE is the owner of Dutch energy company Essent.

The intended collaboration between RWE and Gazprom was announced on Thursday. Gazprom reportedly wants to gain a foothold in the German energy market. Christian Democrat MP Marieke van der Werf wants to know whether Gazprom could in future gain control over Essent subsidiaries based in the Netherlands.

She asked the minister whether Dutch laws and regulations afforded adequate protection against government interference in Gazprom, in which the Russian state holds a controlling stake. The Christian Democrats would also like to know whether shares in the Borssele nuclear power plant could end up in the hands of Gazprom.

More generally, Ms Van der Werf wanted to know whether there was an official cabinet reaction to the possible collaboration.
