AMSTERDAM — The former computer system administrator of the Twente University was sentenced to three years jail and a conditional TBS psychiatric treatment for an arson attack at the Enschede tertiary institute last November.

The Almelo Court found the 27-year-old H B, of Hengelo, guilty of arson that caused EUR 40 million in damages and shutdown the university's computer network. The fire destroyed the institute's applied mathematics and arithmetic faculty building.

The public prosecution had demanded two weeks ago a five-year jail sentence and compulsory TBS psychiatric treatment, Dutch associated press ANP reported.

But psychiatry experts with Pieter Baan Centrum concluded after examining the man that the arson attack was related to problems in the family home. At the time of the attack, B was still living with his parents, who often argued.

The experts said the arson attack was a means of expression and the court accepted their recommendation to sentence him to suspended TBS treatment.

Police to accept internet crime reports

Starting from next year, police will accept crime reports over the internet, allowing citizens to report crimes such as bike and car thefts or vandalism from the comfort of their own home, Radio Netherlands reported.

The public will be able to report crimes via the website www.politie.nl, but it will also remain possible to submit crime reports in person.
