AMSTERDAM – The nuisance caused by young people in parts of Amsterdam is getting worse. More and more young people are causing trouble, Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen told the city council on Wednesday.

They are getting in trouble with the police more often and more young people are once again ending up on the wrong path after they've undergone counselling or disciplinary programmes.

"A considerable share of the youth in Amsterdam-West are heading in the wrong direction," Cohen says. "There are too many Moroccan youth in danger of slipping into crime."

The mayor says the problem is not confined to the group of 30 to 35 troublemakers that have been causing problems in the Slotervaart district. "It is bigger than that. That is why I am worried."
