AMSTERDAM – Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen pointed out to Slotervaart residents on Sunday evening that it is partly their responsibility to solve the nuisance caused by young people and other problems in the city district.

He said this during a meeting with several dozen area residents to discuss the recent unrest in the district.

"What it comes down to is that the community must take a stand," Cohen said after the meeting. He also told attendees that parents have the duty to raise their children properly. "That is the key."

If they can no longer handle their sons or daughters, they should seek help. He also called on neighbourhood residents to report to police if they see or hear something suspicious.
