THE HAGUE – Customs officials have stumbled upon a remarkable method from smuggling drugs into the country: insects stuffed with cocaine.

In July the customs officials in Amsterdam intercepted a postal package from Peru for which scan footage showed an unusual picture, the finance ministry announced on Thursday.

After investigation it turned out that the package contained more than 100 dead insects. An opening had been cut in the insects' backs and stuffed with drugs.

The package contained a total of 300 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of EUR 8,000.
