KAATSHEUVEL – Visitors on the Python roller coaster at the Efteling narrowly escaped death on Monday evening. The rollercoaster carriages got stuck at the highest peak of the track but suddenly started heading downwards again while park workers tried to evacuate visitors from the carriages.

No visitors were injured, though one park worker suffered minor injuries when the train started running again, a park spokesperson said.

The Efteling says the carriages stopped at the peak of the track because of a technical problem. The park emergency services helped evacuate the 26 people seated in the carriages. 18 people were still in the cars when the rollercoaster started running again unexpectedly.

A worker who managed to jump from a carriage just in time suffered a few scratches, bruises and a slight concussion.

VKmag weblog posted a video on Tuesday showing the incident. The rollercoaster carriage stopped at the highest point of the track (29 metres) and Efteling workers climbed up to help the passengers. Suddenly the cars started moving again.

It is clear from the video that the safety bars on the carriages just evacuated remained open. Closer examination shows that one of the passengers seated in front was just able to close his safety bar in time.

The individual who filmed the incident says that the worst did not make it onto the video and claims that one of the park workers lost his balance at a great height and fell. The Efteling spokesperson denies this.

The park's management says that evacuation procedures have been tightened up and explained to workers. The park has started an investigation into the incident with the help of an independent certification agency. "We understand that the people on the rollercoaster were very shocked."
