The talks aimed at reaching agreement on a so-called 'Purple plus' Dutch government coalition of free-market liberal VVD, the Labour party, D66 and Green Left enter their third week today.

Just before he entered the Senate building, where the talks are taking place, the leader of the VVD, Mark Rutte, announced that he has the backing of the senior members of his party.

Mr Rutte held briefings at the weekend with mmbers of the party's national executive as well as regional leaders.

The coalition is referred to as 'Purple-plus' since it would combine the "blue" of the VVD with the "red" of the Labour Party, plus the two smaller parties.
