Close shave on New Zealand ski slopes

A 29-year-old Dutch woman has narrowly escaped death on the slopes at Whakapapa on New Zealand’s North Island. She was sledging with a friend on Monday when she plummeted 30-metres into a ravine.

Her fall was broken by a thick pile of snow among the rocks. New Zealand police say it is a miracle that she survived without so much as a broken bone.

A 38-year-old Dutchman has been killed in a skiing accident in the same area. He collided with a pole on his descent and was taken to hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The fatal accident, which occurred on Friday, was announced by local police today.
