Claims of abuse against soldiers in Curacao
The conservative VVD party and the Freedom Party have called for clarification from the government about reports that Dutch soldiers in Curacao accommodate criminals. According to Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, the naval colony on the island lives in fear of the criminals who abuse Dutch students and regularly attack the homes of troops.
“Of course this cannot be true. Our military families must live there in safety,” said VVD MP André Bosman. If the police cannot guarantee security, he questioned why the Netherlands invests millions of euros annually in fighting crime in Curacao.
The Freedom Party directed similar questions to Defence Minister Hans Hillen and Minster of the Interior Piet Hein Donner. The party asked for an explanation about the possible link between an increase in robberies aimed at the Dutch and the “increasing hate of the local people compared to the Macambas, the white Dutch.”
The Freedom Party said the ministers must also address the situation in Aruba, where Dutch soldiers and their families also deal with criminals.
