TILBURG – The controversial church bells of the Holy Margarita Maria Church in Tilburg did not ring out on Monday morning. A member of the neighbourhood committee reported this. It seems as if Father Harm Schilder has decided to take the advice of his lawyer and the diocese of Den Bosch.

Last week the municipality issued the parish two fines of EUR 5,000 after an ultimatum from the city expired. The municipality says the sounding of the bells for the early mass at 7.15 am violates noise standards. Residents living in the area have been complaining for months.

The priest insists that the church has the right to sound the bells for mass. His objection to the fines will be addressed later in a hearing.
