Children’s helpline offers free calls
Dutch Family Minister Rouvoet to provide free mobile calls to children’s helpline beginning in 2009.1 October 2008
AMSTERDAM – Beginning in 2009, children can call the national children's helpline for free on their mobile phones. Youth and Family Minister André Rouvoet assigned EUR 400,000 for the project.
Rouvoet said it was important for children to be able to discuss their problems, and high mobile phone costs should not stop them. The minister added that mobile phone calls offer more privacy than landlines.
The children's helpline offers assistance, advice and information. In 2007, the service received 107,000 phone calls. That number is expected to double after free mobile calls begin on 1 January 2009.
