AMSTERDAM – The justice department in Den Bosch demanded on Wednesday that 31-year-old resident S. Al-S. be sentenced to a one-year suspended prison sentence and 240 hours of community service for mistreating and neglecting her three children over four years.

The public prosecution office (OM) says she knew very well what she was doing. The children were aged 6,5, and 1 when the abuse began.

"They were starved, put outside naked in the cold, and beaten with sticks," said public prosecutor M. Wijnbelt. "Child Protection Services had never seen a case this bad."

The case was looked into when teachers reported that the two boys arrived at school everyday unwashed and covered with scars. The father worked nights and was seldom at home.

"Al-S. has been in the Netherlands seven years. Her husband has returned to Iraq. The father is guilty of everything," said the woman's lawyer, asking that she be acquitted.

The court is expected to rule on 21 March.
