AMSTERDAM — Police discovered the bodies of two young children in a flat in the North Holland city of Purmerend on Wednesday morning.

The girl, almost two, and her six-month old brother were killed violently, a police spokesperson said.

Officers went to the home on Overlanderstraat at 3am after a call from the 21-year-old mother. The woman lived there along with her two children. The family was not known to the police or the childcare services.

The mother was taken into custody and forensic experts were brought in to examine the crime scene.

Purmerend is a city of 77,000 people north of Amsterdam.
